Punjabi alphabets for kids

Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language which is derived from the Persian words for ‘Five Water’.

This refers to the five eastern tributaries of the river Indus i.e. the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas.

The Punjabi language is descended from the Shauraseni language of Northern India and later on, became a distinct language in the 11th Century.

Punjabi is one of the official languages of India and is written with the help of the Gurumukhi alphabet.

There are mainly two main varieties of the Punjabi language i.e. Eastern Punjabi and Western Punjabi.

Eastern Punjabi is mostly spoken in the states of Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, etc. whereas Western Punjabi is mainly spoken in the Punjab province of Pakistan and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab of India.

Western Punjabi is otherwise known as the Lahanda or Lahndi language.

The Punjabi language is quite older than our national language Hindi as the Punjabi language originated from the “Prakrit Apbhramsha” in the 7th Century AD and the very early works of the Punjabi language were originated in the 10th Century.

Moreover, some Pashto speakers understand Punjabi easily as it is an Indo-Aryan language and Pashto is an Iranian language. However, the vice-versa is not true and Punjabi speakers do not understand Pashto easily.

There are a total of 35 letters in Punjabi which includes both vowels and consonants.

Out of these 35 alphabets, 10 are vowels and the remaining 25 alphabets are consonants.

Amongst the 10 vowels, 3 are lax vowels which are phonetically short and 7 are tense vowels which are phonetically long.

The vowel “Mukta” in Punjabi means “liberation”. It has no symbol but still, it is being pronounced between every consonant where no other vowel is present.

In the Punjabi language, nine matras are mainly used with 3 vowels.

There are three main signs which are used along with the matras known as Lagakhar.

These signs are Bindi, Tippee, and Adhak; they are known as Lagakhar as they always come in combination with the Laga.

In India, Punjabi is written with the Gurumukhi alphabets whereas in Pakistan it is written with a different version of the Urdu alphabets known as Shahmukhi.

However, the written standard for the Punjabi language is known as Majhi and is named after Punjab’s Majha region.

The Gurumukhi alphabet was originated from the Lahanda alphabet. It was further standardized by Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Sikh Guru during the 16th Century.

The religious scripture of Sikhism i.e. the Guru Granth Sahib is written in the Gurumukhi language. Gurumukhi can be commonly referred to as the Sikh script and it is the official script of the Punjabi language in India. There are a total of 35 letters, 6 consonants, nine diacritics for vowels, two diacritics meant for nasal sounds, three subscript characters and a single diacritic which germinates consonants in the Gurumukhi script. In the Gurumukhi script, there is no concept of upper case and lower case letters.

The alphabets are arranged in a logical fashion i.e. first the vowels, then the consonants and then are the semi-vowels.

It is a common understanding among people that Punjabi is a language and Gurumukhi is also another language that has been used to write the Guru Granth Sahib. However, this is a big misunderstanding as Punjabi is a language and Gurumukhi is a script that is used in writing the Punjabi language. The Sikhs who are mainly Punjabi speaking people, write Punjabi with the help of the Gurumukhi script.

Hence, the Punjabi language is not very hard to learn and can be easily learned by knowing about the alphabets, the vowel diacritic, and the pronunciation of these diacritics. Several online sessions would even make it easier to learn the language.
