How to switch baby’s formula

Parents are concerned about switching to a new formula because of the fear of the baby not tolerating it. It can be a scary process, but switching your baby’s formula can make all the difference.

But first let’s choose the right formula for your baby.

Choosing the right formula

Here are some guidelines to finding right formula.

Disclaimer: Always, consult your paediatrician to know which option is best for your baby.

Milk based

Casein and whey proteins from cow’s milk are used in this conventional formula. Cow’s milk proteins are bigger than human milk proteins, making them harder to digest for certain infants. Whey has been added to several milk-based formulas to make the casein-whey ratio more similar to breast milk. Which makes it simpler to digest.

Partially or fully hydrolyzed

The milk proteins in this formula are broken down into tiny bits rather than remaining whole. Some are made entirely of whey protein, while others are made up of a casein-whey blend with additional whey. Hydrolyzed formulas are frequently recommended for babies with an eczema family history or who have reflux.

Extensively hydrolyzed

The milk proteins in this formula are almost fully broken down or removed completely, making it “predigested” or “hypoallergenic”. It is suggested for babies who are allergic to cow’s milk.

Soy-based

These formulas are not recommended for babies who cannot tolerate dairy because milk and soy allergies are typically linked. There are only a few instances where soy formula should be used instead of milk formula.

Transitioning your baby

Switching formulas can be done in one of two ways.

One Step Transition

During one step transition, no transition time is required if your infant goes from a regular formula to Hydrolyzed one. But it is recommended that changes in the baby’s bowel motions or other symptoms of tolerance should be closely monitored.

Slow Transition

This method entails combining the two formulas and gradually reducing the amount of the original formula.

How to transition your baby to a new formula

Using Same protein

It’s easier to switch formulas right away when using the same protein. Your infant may be able to transfer formulas very quickly and may not make a fuss about a new formula. To see how your baby reacts, try feeding them a small amount of the new formula. If there is no problem, you can instantly transition.

Changing the protein

If you’re switching the major protein, make the transition gradually. Your baby may be a little picky about the new formula’s flavor. You have to move gradually in this case. This will help to hide the new formula’s flavor and make the transition smoother.

Start by giving your infant 3/4 part of the old formula and 1/4 part of the new formula.
Feed this mixture to your baby on day one.

Next day, mix half of the old formula with half of the new formula and feed it to your baby.
On the 3rd day feed them new formula only.
